Growl 08 TVRfix meets TorqueV8 Print

The TVRfix Griff has had a new breath of fresh air literally! At the Growl 08 we were collared by Derek of Absolutely Shocks into testing TorqueV8’s new induction system that consists of a new 72mm Airflow meter, enlarged 72mm plenum, 72mm Smooth flow pipe, ecu chip and adjustable fuel regulator. Eann of TorqueV8 explained he had designed and developed the induction system over the last 18 months around his special 72mm Airflow meter that he can map into his ecu chip. This provides optimum airflow, fuelling and power.

We booked the car on Crazy Horses dyno for a power run before the modification was done. Eann at this stage had no idea how the Griff was performing and it only managed 241hp! Eann of TorqueV8, then set about the car while we went to the pub for lunch.

One bottle of wine and pork chop later we returned to see him set the car up. He fitted a air/fuel sensor to the exhaust, another wire to the coil and air flow meter then connected his lap top and started playing or should that be tuning. After a while, the car was fit for a road test. We noticed the mid range power had increased and after a short blast down the M40 and back on an A road back to Ettington we had to overtake a Sunday driver (obviously confused of the day!), dropping into 3rd the back end stepped out! This caught me by surprise I knew we had more power but not quite that much!

Returning to the Growl and being greeted by an anxious Eann (we were gone for 40mins or so) we gave him the thumbs up. The Griff had never felt down on power, and had always shunted at low speeds particularly when in slow moving/queuing traffic, which made for tiresome driving but this had almost disappeared and power was definitely up. With car put to bed and the evening’s proceedings about to begin we waited in anticipation for the next day’s dyno run.

Over the pub that night we bumped into Eann and he was still not 100% happy, he asked if we could be around at 10 Sunday so he could fiddle/tweak some more. Any one who knows us will know we don’t do Sunday mornings, so we happily gave him the keys to get on with it knowing a lay in was well over due for us. There was much speculation in the pub that evening as to the new power out put, I was looking for a 280 but the favoured figure by consensus was 275 (I now wish I had set up a sweep stake!!).

Sunday morning - well lunchtime - we wandered out of the hotel to find the Griff ready for another power run and a happy Eann, anxious for the results (along with numerous other Growlers). Eventually on the dyno it produced 273.5hp but the graphs showed weakening mixture towards the top end still, so Eann wanted to tweak further and another dyno slot was arranged (thanks Gary (of Crazy Horses fame) for agreeing to stay on for the last run of the day!

Couple of hours later and it was ready to do battle again. It still wasn’t quite right and after a tweak of the fuel pressure regulator we got a 280 hp but after brief celebrations Simon called it a ‘duff’ run, apparently their air temp sensor was touching a hot part of the car!!!  The dyno was reset, equipment adjusted and we finally got a run of 274.9 but the torque was up another 70 pounds feet, Simon’s (Gary’s right hand man) expert opinion was that was the limit of tweaking and that no more power was available with out serious modifications. Now what about the Nitrous mod you’ve got on yours Eann!!!!

Driving home it felt like a new car very pleased with the results.
